The joint programme titled 'IRiS- Putting Youth and Women in the center of Climate Resilience and Safety in Barbados' aims to enhance inclusion, resilience, and safety for vulnerable populations in Barbados, particularly women and youth, by addressing the impacts of climate change and violence through participatory urban planning and development initiatives.
The programme focuses on enhancing climate resilience and safety in Barbados by empowering youth and women through the IRiS model and the Caribbean Safe Schools Initiative. It engages approximately 3,500 individuals, including 1,500 women and 1,000 children, fostering inclusivity and resilience in urban planning and disaster risk management. By facilitating collaboration among communities, civil society organizations, and government entities, the programme aims to create safer, more inclusive public spaces and contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ultimately improving the quality of life and promoting social equity in the region.
Expected key results
Link communities, policymakers and government to develop urban spaces and infrastructure resilient to climate change through the implementation of the Inclusive, resilient in safe, secure and smart spaces (IRiS) and the Caribbean Safe Schools Initiative (CSSI) models. These inclusive and participatory planning processes will directly benefit 3,500 people in Speightstown.
Capacity development of communities, CSOs, CBOs, and youth groups to understand and advocate for their role as rights holders and governments’ obligations in climate action.
