Brief Description

The joint programme titled 'Empowering Equality: Strengthening Gender Data Systems for Sustainable Development in ECA' aims to enhance the capacity of national statistical systems in Europe and Central Asia to measure and report on SDG 5 indicators related to gender equality, ultimately improving data availability and institutionalizing gender data practices for sustainable development.

The joint programme strengthens gender data systems in Europe and Central Asia to enhance the measurement and reporting of SDG 5 indicators. It provides training and technical support to national statistical offices, improving their capacity to collect and analyze gender-disaggregated data. The programme addresses critical data gaps and institutionalizes gender data practices, ensuring sustainability and replication in other countries. By reaching numerous beneficiaries, it drives progress towards gender equality and supports the achievement of related Sustainable Development Goals, ultimately enhancing climate resilience and promoting sustainable development.

Expected key results

1. Enhanced Capacity of National Statistical Systems:

The JP will significantly improve the technical and operational capacities of national statistical offices in the pilot countries. This includes training and support in advanced data collection, analysis, and dissemination techniques. The enhanced capacity will ensure the systematic collection and use of high-quality gender data, enabling better monitoring and reporting on SDG 5 indicators.

2. Increased Availability and Accessibility of Gender Data:

The programme will lead to a substantial increase in the availability and accessibility of gender-disaggregated data. By developing and implementing standardized methodologies for gender data collection, the JP will fill critical data gaps, particularly in under-reported areas such as gender-based violence, unpaid care work, and women's economic participation. The improved data availability will support evidence-based policy-making and advocacy for gender equality. Strengthening SDG data will serve as a catalyst, creating a multiplier effect that enhances the collection of disaggregated data sets across other SDGs.

This improved data framework will unlock the potential for more detailed and comprehensive insights, driving progress in multiple areas simultaneously.

3. Institutionalization of Gender Data Practices:

The JP will ensure the institutionalization of gender data collection and analysis within national statistical frameworks. By integrating these practices into national policies and development plans, and securing long-term financial commitments from respective governments, the programme will make gender data systems a permanent and standard part of national statistical operations.

This institutionalization will sustain the positive impacts of the JP beyond its initial implementation period, driving ongoing progress towards gender equality.
