Entrepreneurial Trainings For People With Disabilities

When asked if a people with disability participate in a given cohort, the most common response seems to be “no.” This response comes despite the recognition that majority of people with disabilities can be employed in a vast majority of work environments. Yet, enabling this employment requires simultaneous improvements across several levels. These improvements include changing legal frameworks, offering training and assistance to potential employers, creating accessible work environments, and most importantly providing necessary education for people with disabilities.

“In fact, many organizations do not hire people in the first and second categories of disability” says Nodira Tillayeva. This is due to the belief that people with disabilities in these categories may easily become tired and might not be able to fully deliver their duties. Yet, potential employers incorrectly understand their capabilities. Every organization is obliged to create jobs for people with disabilities, and to provide requisite working conditions. Before denying a disabled person the job, an employer should offer the job to such a person, and follow-up on their skills during a probation period. This will ensure satisfaction in job performance and ensure fair job opportunities to the disabled community.

During the UN Joint Programme on Social Protection in Uzbekistan, the UNDP has held a micro-grant competition for small social initiatives which seek to protect the rights of people with disabilities in Uzbekistan. The Public Association of People with Disability, “Inclusive Society,” in the city of Tashkent is one of the 11 winners. The association’s Chairperson, Ms. Nodira Tillaeva, shares her experience, ideas and implementation path.

For their efforts, the Association of People with Disability got awarded a small grant for a project which aimed to provide equal rights and opportunities to people with disabilities through training young people with disabilities in computer literacy and accounting. For this, the project team has developed a special training course aimed to improve the computer literacy of young people with disabilities, to teach them how to use the Internet, and to teach the basics of accounting. Thus, the program altogether aims to increase the participants chances of securing a job. The program hopes to be able to create a better future for young women and men with disabilities, as well as provide them with opportunities to find happiness, including building their own families.

Nodira says “When people have no jobs, they can easily get depressed and lose their self-confidence.” That is why, she believes the implementation of this project is vital. Nodira understands perfectly well the feelings and situations of persons with disabilities. Nodira, herself is an accountant who sees the promise that this career holds for persons with disabilities. One benefit of her career is that an individual can work from home, online, without a need to go outside. Yet, computer abilities and accounting skills are interrelated so it can be difficult to do accounting work without having good computer skills.

After instructing two courses on accounting, Nodira aims to teach the participants entrepreneurial skills, which would allow them to open their own businesses. Entrepreneurs can do business only if they know how to manage their income and expenses. If one wants to be a successful entrepreneur, it is important to have a better understanding of cost and benefit analysis. Thus, knowing the basics of accounting is crucial. And what is more, these entrepreneurs could themselves create new jobs for other people with disabilities.
