From 2020 to 2022, the UN Joint Programme supported the Government of Lao PDR to strengthen the national social protection system, by building national capacities, improving public finance management, and piloting a social assistance programme for pregnant women and newborn children.
The UN Joint Programme in Lao PDR supported a social assistance pilot for pregnant women and newborn children, by providing a cash benefit of 150,000 kip per month, for better healthcare and nutrition. The lessons from the pilot are expected to contribute to the future expansion of social protection in the country.
From 2020 to 2022, ILO, UNICEF and UNCDF worked with the Government of Lao PDR under a Joint Programme in order to plan, prepare, implement, and monitor the National Social Protection Strategy as well as to generate learning to show that social protection is feasible and impactful in Lao PDR.
