Digitalization as a Catalyst for Inclusion in Colombia

In a groundbreaking effort to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusion, Colombia is leveraging innovative tools and partnerships through the Joint SDG Fund. The new joint UN programme, spearheaded by Mireia Villar Forner, the UN Resident Coordinator in Colombia, underscores the importance of integrating digital solutions into national infrastructure development to ensure that large-scale investments function as public goods.

“This initiative, funded by the Joint SDG Fund’s Digitalization Window, positions us within a critical ecosystem,” the UN Resident Coordinator emphasized. “It ensures that the significant infrastructure investments taking place are public goods for the country, turning digitalization into a vehicle for inclusion, especially in the most peripheral territories.”

The programme is designed to connect underserved communities in remote areas to essential digital services, creating pathways for equitable access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. By focusing on the most marginalized regions, the initiative aligns with the SDGs, particularly those related to reducing inequalities and fostering inclusive economic growth.

As digital infrastructure expands, Colombia’s approach serves as a model for using technology to drive social inclusion and sustainable development, proving that innovation can—and should—be a tool for empowerment and equity.
